Supported Independent Living (SIL)

The Supported Independent Living (SIL) program is another of the services offered by Community Living Atikokan. It is designed to offer a diverse series of individualized personal supports aimed at teaching and/or maintaining daily living skills, problem solving skills, and emergency coping skills that individuals are likely to encounter while living on their own. It strives to encourage as much independence, self-confidence, and community integration as possible. The program is sensitive to the varied needs of each person and is designed to meet specific and unique needs. Each program is designed to fit individual life-styles and is flexible enough to sufficiently handle unexpected or unspecified situations. The degree and type of supports required are determined by the individual receiving supports, his/her parents/families, other service professionals, and the SIL workers, to ensure health, safety and personal needs are met. The program provides individuals with a normal, non-institutional life style, taking into consideration each person's individual functioning level. It also provides personal support on a one to one basis within the home setting, the community at large, or with integration between generic services. The goal is to meet all aspects of each person's needs, such as personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning, socialization, financial management and health.
